When TV meets property

Online property platform, Zoopla, has conducted research into the link between some of the biggest British TV shows of the past year and the housing market.

London’s Poplar saw the biggest rise in average house price, the location of BBC’s Call the Midwife. Birmingham came in at second, perhaps due to the BBC’s much-loved gangster drama Peaky Blinders.

Call the Midwife won the Christmas Day ratings battle in 2017 for the second year in a row, with an impressive 9.6 million people tuning in to watch.

Similarly, this season of Peaky Blinders managed to pull in its biggest audience yet as 3.56 million tuned in for the final.

Of course, we have enough property TV shows of our own. Earlier in 2017, independent research agency Gorkana looked into the nation’s favourite property shows to discover (perhaps unsurprisingly) that DIY SOS came out on top. Its present, Nick Knowles, also ranked in first place as the most popular presenter.

The UK’s top 5 favourite property TV shows:

Show Percentage of votes
DIY SOS 19%
Grand Designs 18%
Homes Under the Hammer 17%
Location, Location, Location 16%
Escape to the Country 9%

Doug Crawford, CEO of My Home Move, said: “Property is a very British obsession […] What the results show is that property is aspirational; whether it’s improving the properties that we own or building and buying the properties we dream about.”

The survey also looked into the nation’s dream property, finding that Downton Abbey came in on top with 16% of the vote, followed by Dallas’ Southfork Ranch and Hogwarts.
